Northeast Rivers is a three-week whitewater kayak trip for motivated and experienced paddlers. Applicants must have had previous whitewater experience or participated in another Chewonki whitewater program. Some of the most classic whitewater rivers of the country lie in the Northeast. Rivers such as the Penobscot, Kennebec, and Ottawa are famous for their magnificent paddling opportunities. This trip takes participants to these and many other rivers throughout the northern United States and Canada.

Travel the Finest White Water in the Northeast

We travel by van as we seek the finest whitewater runs in the Northeast. We work on skills such as advanced river running, whitewater reading, and freestyle kayaking. There is a strong emphasis on group river travel; students have the chance to hone their leadership abilities by leading the group down different stretches of river. While traveling, we have numerous opportunities to explore the history of these rivers. On land, we will learn cooking, packing, woodcutting, fire building, navigation, map and compass, and reading the weather.

As with all Chewonki trips, “Leave No Trace” ethics underlie our approach to the places we visit. As a result, participants learn to live and travel responsibly in the outdoors.
