Greetings from Chewonki Neck! We are currently in the process of finalizing the details for two amazing experiences to add to our offerings of 2011. The first is our Wilderness Leadership Expedition. This summer 10 participants will join the Leadership training course. The first week will involve training alongside Chewonki trip leaders on a variety of wilderness trips. Once the group returns from the training trips, they will take a four-day Wilderness Medical Course. From here the group will be plan and execute a two and a half week canoe expedition in Quebec. We plan on switching the expeditions each year to cover many areas in which Chewonki has not traveled before. This is an excellent opportunity for former trip participants to train alongside our leaders and gain experience in preparing and leading an expedition. Additionally, this program will help prepare for the possibility of future trip leading opportunities at Chewonki. Not to mention that this is an amazing way to spend the summer! This course is open to 17-20 year-olds. Prior extended trip experience is suggested. More information will be posted on our website. Feel free to give us a call in the trip office. Also for 2011, we are thrilled to once again be sending a group up to Northern Quebec to the George River. The George River Expedition is at the pinnacle of our extended tripping program since 1991. For five weeks the group will travel northward close to 400 miles along the Labrador-Quebec boarder by canoe. Highlights of this trip include exceptional whitewater, vast boreal landscapes, and possible wolf and caribou sightings. The 2011 George River trip can look forward to an adventure of a lifetime! Reunions & Informational Gatherings: Join us for a reunion and informational gathering. These events are a fun way to reconnect with Chewonki friends in your region over some ice cream or other snacks and treats. We’ll show some fun images from the past summer and get excited for 2011. Dan Sandburg (UMB 2010) is currently traveling around the west coast climbing. Kim Covil (UMB 2010) just got off the Main Branch of the Salmon River in Idaho. She is heading over to lead a NOLS canoe course; from there she will head out west to Lake Tahoe for a winter of skiing. Many of the summer wilderness trip staff are currently teaching in our Outdoor Classroom programs, passing along their passion for the outdoors.
