Umbagog Whitewater Kayakers finished their adventure on a high note: “surfing” on Smooth Ledge, one of the Rapid River’s sweet spots. It’s a special treat for anyone who loves whitewater kayaking, and the Umgagog gang made the most of it!
Maine AT Backpackers reached the summit of Mount Katahdin on Saturday. The weather was perfect; the views must have been fabulous on that rocky peak that feels so close to the sky. Katahdin is the northern endpoint of the Appalachian Trail, which adds to the sense of reverence among hikers at the summit. Northeast High Peakers left on July 10 for their 5-week backpacking expedition. They were heading straight to the White Mountains, where they’re climbing the Presidentials. After that, they’ll be exploring a very different range, the Adirondacks.
Boatbuilders launched their beautiful kayaks on Tuesday at high noon. It was quite a scene at the waterfront, with the whole Boys Camp and lots of Wilderness Trips and year-round staff lining up on the dock and along the shore to send the group off in their own boats for a 2½-week ocean adventure with a rollicking Chewonki cheer! The maiden voyage will be a short trip to Chewonki’s Castle Island, where they’ll make any final preparations before heading to out to sea.
